Bunions

What are Bunions?

Bunions are bony bumps that form on the side of the foot near the big toe. They cause the big toe to lean towards the other toes, resulting in joint misalignment. Bunions can be painful, swollen, and make it difficult to find properly fitting shoes. Treatment options include comfortable footwear, padding, pain relief measures, and surgery in severe cases.

What causes bunions?

Bunions are typically caused by a combination of factors, including:

  • Inherited foot structure or mechanics
  • Wearing ill-fitting shoes, especially tight, narrow, or high-heeled ones
  • Foot stress and overuse, such as prolonged standing or certain activities
  • Foot and joint conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis or inflammatory joint diseases
  • Gender (more common in women) and age (more likely to develop or worsen with age)

What are the symptoms of a bunion?

Here are the symptoms of a bunion :

  • Bony bump on the side of the foot, near the base of the big toe
  • Pain or tenderness at the bunion site
  • Swelling and redness around the bunion
  • Limited range of motion in the affected toe

  • Toe misalignment, with the big toe pointing toward the other toes
