What are Fractures?

Fractures are breaks or cracks in bones that can occur from trauma or conditions weakening the bone. They cause symptoms like pain, swelling, and difficulty moving. Different types of fractures that can occur in the foot and ankle.

  • Ankle Fractures: Involves breaks in the bones of the ankle joint, such as the tibia, fibula, or talus.
  • Calcaneus Fractures: Fractures in the heel bone (calcaneus), often caused by high-energy impacts or falls from height.
  • Metatarsal Fractures: Fractures in the long bones of the foot, called metatarsals, typically caused by direct trauma or twisting injuries.
  • Phalangeal Fractures: Fractures in the toe bones (phalanges), resulting from stubbing or crushing injuries.
  • Lisfranc Fractures: Fractures or dislocations at the midfoot region, involving the metatarsals and tarsal bones.
  • Navicular Fractures: Fractures in the navicular bone, located in the midfoot region.
  • Talus Fractures: Fractures in the talus bone, which connects the leg and foot.
  • Stress Fractures: Hairline cracks in the bone caused by repetitive stress or overuse, often seen in athletes.
