TENDON PROBLEMS

What are Tendon Problems?

Tendon problems refer to conditions that affect the tendons, which are strong, fibrous tissues that connect muscles to bones. These problems can range from inflammation and irritation to tendon degeneration or tears. Some common tendon problems include:

  • Posterior Tibial Tendon: This tendon runs along the inside of the ankle and helps support the arch of the foot. Tears can occur due to overuse, injury, or conditions like tendonitis.
  • Peroneal Tendons: These tendons are located on the outside of the ankle and help with stability and ankle movement. Tears can result from sudden twists, repetitive stress, or ankle sprains.
  • Achilles Tendon: The Achilles tendon is located at the back of the ankle and connects the calf muscles to the heel bone. It can tear from sudden force or overuse, often resulting in severe pain and difficulty walking.

These tendon tears can cause pain, swelling, weakness, and instability in the foot and ankle.

Who’re likely to suffer from tendon problems

Tendon problems can affect individuals of any age or activity level. However, certain factors may increase the likelihood of experiencing tendon problems. These include:

  • Athletes and Active Individuals: People who engage in sports or activities that involve repetitive motions, intense training, or overuse of specific tendons are more prone to tendon problems.
  • Aging Population: Tendons tend to become less flexible and more prone to degeneration with age, increasing the risk of tendon problems.
  • Improper Training or Technique: Insufficient conditioning, poor technique, or inadequate warm-up before physical activity can put extra strain on tendons, leading to problems.
  • Occupational Factors: Jobs or activities that involve repetitive motions, heavy lifting, or working in awkward positions can place excessive stress on tendons.
  • Genetic Predisposition: Some individuals may have a genetic predisposition to tendon problems, making them more susceptible to injuries or degenerative changes.
  • Chronic Health Conditions: Certain medical conditions like diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, or metabolic disorders can affect tendon health and increase the risk of tendon problems.

Symptoms of Tendon Problem

Symptoms of a tendon problem can vary depending on the specific condition and affected tendon. However, some common symptoms associated with tendon problems include:

  • Pain: Tenderness, soreness, or sharp pain in the area surrounding the affected tendon. The pain may be worse during or after activity or with specific movements.
  • Swelling: Visible swelling or puffiness around the tendon or joint.
  • Stiffness: Limited range of motion or difficulty moving the affected joint or body part.
  • Weakness: Reduced strength or loss of function in the affected area.
  • Clicking or popping sensations: Some individuals may experience clicking or popping sensations during movement of the affected tendon.
  • Tenderness: Tenderness to touch or pressure at the site of the affected tendon.
  • Grating or crepitus: In some cases, there may be a grating or creaking sensation when the tendon is moved.

It’s important to note that these symptoms may vary depending on the specific tendon problem and its severity.
